Title:  As Above, So Below: Jill Randall Solo Exhibition

Date:  13 January to 13 February 2025

Summary: Educated at Falmouth School of Art, Jill Randall’s recent work has focussed on artist residencies in industrial settings. She has established innovative ways of interpreting industrial heritage, especially metal-mining, through her practice, demonstrating how contemporary fine art can be a mechanism for cultural regeneration and reengagement. Randall has created work in response to post-mining sites in Wales, Cornwall, and most recently, the old goldfields of Victoria and South Australia.

Title:    Valentine Hearts and Flower Dish Making (2 day workshop)

Dates:   Wednesday 22 January 2025 (part 1) and Wednesday 5 February 2025 (part 2)

Times:  10.00am to 2.00pm (day 1 – making) and 10.00am to 1.00pm (day 2 – decorating)

Summary: Would you like to have a go at making that special someone in your life a unique handmade gift for Valentine’s Day? Create your very own ceramic valentine hearts and flower shaped dishes. This will comprise a one day workshop which will be split into two parts. In part 1 you will be shown how to make the hearts and dishes. These will go off to be fired in our kiln, then in part 2 you will come back in to decorate your ceramic creations using special coloured ceramic paint. These will go back to the kiln and fired with a clear glaze ready for collection or delivery. No experience necessary, all equipment and instruction will be provided, you might want to bring an apron should you wish.

Equipment & materials: Clay and tools are provided.

You will produce: A painted ceramic heart and a ceramic flower dish which will be fired and glazed in our electric kiln.

Collection/delivery: Your item will usually be ready within ten days. You can either collect your item from Wheal Martyn or we can post it to you.  If you would like it posted please select this option when you book online.

Combine with a visit: If you are not an annual pass holder but would like to combine your workshop with a visit to the museum you can purchase a reduced price admission ticket at the point of booking.

Level: Beginners, from age 10 welcome.  Any child under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied at all times by an adult.

Workshop duration: 4 hours (day 1 – making) and 3 hours (day 2 – decorating)

Title:    Coil Pot Building (2 day workshop)

Dates:   Friday 31 January 2025 (part 1) and Friday 14 February 2025 (part 2)

Times:  10.00am to 2.00pm (day 1 – making) and 10.00am to 1.00pm (day 2 – decorating)

Summary: Have you ever wanted to have a go at building a ceramic pot? Well this is your chance to have a go and get creative. The workshop will be split into two parts on different dates as this allows us to get your pots fired ready for decoration. In part 1 you will be shown how to build a pot using coils of clay. These will go off to be fired in our kiln, then in part 2 you will come back in to decorate your ceramic creations using coloured ceramic paint. You will also be shown how to apply coloured glazes which you will then have a chance to have a go at yourself. These will go back to the kiln for a final firing ready for collection or delivery. No experience necessary, just a willingness to try.

You will produce: A small coil pot which will be fired twice in our electric kiln.

Title:     Seven Bay Ukes at Wheal Martyn

Date:    Thursday 6 February 2025

Summary: Seven Bays Ukes are a cheery bunch of friends who meet on most Monday evenings at the Well Parc Hotel in Trevone to play pop/rock and a variety of other songs on the ukulele. Their repertoire embraces a wide range of music including pop classics of the Beatles, Abba, ELO, George Michael, Stereophonics and Elton John.  Since first getting together three years ago, the group have regularly performed at local venues, and are guaranteed to get you singing along and having a good time.

Title: Basic Introduction to Pottery

Date:  Sunday 23 February 2025

Summary: Have you ever wanted to have a go at pottery but not sure where to start? We can help here at Wheal Martyn. We are running a one day workshop where you will be shown three basic techniques. You will be shown how to make a pinch pot, how to make a small dish using coils of clay, and finally you will be shown how to make a decorative tile. You will get to paint your creations with a selection of different coloured slips. Your work will go off to have a clear glaze applied and be fired in our kiln ready for collection or delivery. No experience necessary, just a willingness to try.

Equipment & materials: Clay, slips and tools are provided. You may wish to bring along an apron.

You will produce: A pinch pot, a coil dish and a decorative tile which will be fired in our electric kiln.

25 years of the China Clay History Society sharing our industrial and community heritage

An exhibition marking 25 years of the China Clay History Society, showcasing a variety of clay related topics researched by members over the last 25 years.

Summary: Celebrating 25 years of the China Clay History Society, this exhibition features a wealth of clay industry subjects and stories researched by the Society for exhibitions staged over the last 25 years, complemented by objects, photographs and documents. It demonstrates the research, work and dedication of the Society’s members in preserving and sharing the rich and varied history of Cornwall’s china clay industry and clay communities. Subjects covered range from railway lines to royal visits, churches to community life and much more!

Summary: With Easter just around the corner, where are you going to store all of your eggs? We can help here at Wheal Martyn with our two part workshop. In part 1 you will be shown how to mould an egg holder from a slab of clay. These will go off to be fired in our kiln. Then in part 2 you will come back in to decorate your egg holder trays using a variety of ceramic paints which will bring your creation to life. Your work will go off to have a clear glaze applied and be fired again in our kiln ready for collection or delivery. No experience necessary, just a willingness to try.

Summary: Enjoy a guided nature walk around the 26 acre historic Wheal Martyn grounds led by our site Ranger, highlighting the abundance of nature that calls the former Victorian clay works and wider grounds ‘home’.  You’ll also hear about some of the habitat improvements made during the past year and plans for the future.  Price includes admission to the wider museum after the walk.
